Randy Sandke-Trumpet, Flugelhorn Howard Alden-Guitar Nicki Parrott-Bass, Vocals (2, 4, 7, 11) John Riley-Drums
Randy Sandke, one of jazz's most respected "mainstream" artists, has mastered a wide range of musical idioms—from traditional jazz to his own intriguing "metatonal" theory. In more traditional contexts such as this, Sandke strikes a delicate balance between re-creation and deconstruction and manages to create music that is widely appealing while remaining true to himself. Unconventional Wisdom represents perhaps the most successful convergence to date of the metatonal with the mainstream and should appeal to both of Sandke's audiences. And musical theory aside, it reaffirms the fact that Randy Sandke is one hell of a trumpet player!
