In 2009 in honor of Benny Goodman's centennial, Dave Bennett recorded Celebrates
100 Years Of Benny (ARCD 19389), an inventive reworking of songs associated with the King Of Swing. Clarinet Is King is a logical extension of the concept but also a major step forward. A lot of people play standards the same way they were always done and that is fine, but he wants to get away from that. Artie Shaw, Benny and the others were all creating something new at the time. He is working towards developing his own style and sound and is always interested in stretching himself. He wants to make new music, a new style. It is a huge goal but there is nothing like the feeling of hearing something new. "It's obvious to me Dave has done his homework and that his passion is learning from the masters. I enjoy listening to his fluid technique on this fine recording."
